Del Piero Done, A-League Secures a Superstar

The Italian superstar shocks by heading down under.

Australia’s A-League may not be on the same level as some of Europe’s powerhouse soccer leagues, but you can’t criticise them for not having a go.

After a week of up and down negotiations, Sydney FC pulled off the improbable by securing the services of international superstar Alessandro Del Piero, one of the all-time greats in Italian football history.

Competing with English Premier League club Liverpool, Sydney announced from Del Piero’s hometown of Turin on Wednesday that the deal was done.

The signing made news across the globe and it came despite the Italian also being linked to clubs such as Celtic, Tottenham, Southampton, Sion and Sporting Braga.

"It's a special day for me and I will call myself an Australian for the next two years," said the ex-513 game Juventus star. "There was no better option for me (than Sydney FC).

"I am happy to begin this adventure. This is close to my heart, to my philosophy. It's a long, long way away, but I feel I have a lot to give the game in Australia."

Del Piero acknowledged that his decision was about giving something back to the sport.

“It is also about a new jersey, a new league, a new life and a new everything. I want to leave a legacy,” he said.

"Sydney is a great city and I look forward to living there. I still have a lot to offer. I am looking forward to exploring the A-League and football in Australia. I can't wait to make an impact on the field as well as off it. It has been two months in the making."

Of course, Del Piero was asked to weigh in on possibly the most famous moment in Australian soccer history, and definitely the most controversial: Italian Fabio Grosso’s dive during the nation’s incredible run to the World Cup finals.

"I'm sure I'll get plenty of questions in Australia about that. Italy was lucky," he said referring to Italy’s late 1-0 win over the Aussies.
