Novak Djokovic was as impressive as they come on Thursday night, defeating would be competitor David Ferrer 6-2 6-2 6-1 in their Australian Open semi-final.
The win propels Djokovic into this third successive Aussie Open final and his demolition of Ferrer means he’ll come into the Grand Slam decider with ample rest.
Djokovic was naturally pretty happy with the result.
"Definitely, at this stage of a tournament, playing semi-finals against the world No 4, somebody that I have respect for, a great competitor and being able to perform as well as I did, it's incredible,” he said.
"I have a great feeling about myself on the court at this moment. Now I have two days off which gives me enough time to get ready and recover for the final."
It could have been that the 30-year-old Ferrer had been worn down by his victory over fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in the quarter-finals, but the man is known for his extreme fitness conditioning, was coming off a two day break and playing in decent temperatures.
Djokovic’s play couldn’t be faulted; he smashed 30 winners with just 16 errors to Ferrer’s 11 and 32 and his shot selection, playing every stroke imaginable, was near perfect.
Ferrer has replaced injured compatriot Rafael Nadal in the top four, an elite group reporters asked whether he felt he belonged to.
“No, no. I think the top four, they are better,” Ferrer answered immediately.
Djokovic advances to face either Andy Murray or Roger Federer in the final with those two will play their semi-final on Friday night.
Federer had a hard task of beating Jo Wilfred Tsonga in the quarters and his aging body will need to have fully recovered to take on Murray. There is some speculation mounting that Federer is carry some sort of back injury- he underwent massage therapy after defeating Tsonga and has been seen wearing an undershirt commonly linked to back problems.
Murray leads the head-to-head 10-9, but Federer has won all three of their grand slam level meets.
