Sydney FC isn’t far from announcing the re-signing of A-League star Alessandro Del Piero for a second season.
The biggest attraction in A-League history, Del Piero has wowed audiences with some spectacular performances and has been a major drawing card for not only the Sky Blues, but the league as a whole.
Rumours are spreading the Sydney FC board signed off on the finer details of the Italian’s new deal yesterday and an announcement is expected in the very near future.
It is believed much of the contract remains the same, including salary (roughly $3.6 million) and incentives, however changes will occur to the way in which the star player is marketed. A better planned merchandising structure will take place during the 2013-14 season after the club rushed their marketing operation this season due to Del Piero’s short notice signing last year.
''It's not so much that the club wants to get the brand, the image and complicate all that, I believe it's just a little bit of tweaking about how to conduct ourselves with him in other marketing type activities, attending events or things like that,'' a source told the Sydney Morning Herald. ''You can imagine that when he signed up, there was a lot to go through and when you travel a year down the track, or not even a year, the practicalities come into play and it's a matter of ensuring those things are understood and clarified.''
Sydney's season has seen a huge turnaround on the back of some Del Piero led success, moving up from bottom of the league into playoff contention, and Del Piero’s brother and agent, Stefano, flew into the Sydney last week to negotiate a new deal.
Sydney FC has seen attendance rise to a whopping 18,500 this season and his presence has allowed the Australian league a global audience with games being televised live in Italy.
