So you thought that since the fantasy football season was done and over you could sit back and enjoy time with the family?
Fantasy football is a year long endeavor and the wise owner keeps track of every offseason injury, trade, cut and sniffle to get a leg up on the next season. Below are some of the more current news and rumors for the month of February.
Patriots eying release of wideout Brandon Lloyd
According to the Boston Globe, the New England Patriots are giving serious thought to releasing wideout Brandon Lloyd. Lloyd accounts for $4.9 million dollars against the cap, including a $3 million option bonus.
The cap space made available combined with the erratic behavior on and off the field by Lloyd may be all the Patriots need to cut the wideout.
Fantasy Analysis: Lloyd put up 911 yards and four scores on 74 catches last season, and while that may look like solid numbers on paper, owners of his know that he couldn't be counted on game to game to put up points. Consider Lloyd no better than a number three receiver next season.
Steven Jackson to test free agency
It has been reported by the St. Louis Times that Jackson has voided the remaining year of his contract to become a free agent. Jackson is looking to play for a playoff contender and early thinking may have him ending up with the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons may be looking to add RB depth after releasing Michael Turner.
Fantasy Analysis: With Jackson being well used at 30, his days of being the primary back may be over. That being said, depending on where he lands he may still end up being a solid number two back due to potential goal line carries. Just be prepared to handcuff him at all cost.
Rob Gronkowski undergoes third surgery on arm
ESPN has reported that Gronkowski underwent a third surgery on his left arm to treat an infection. That being said, he is not expected to miss any extended time.
Fantasy Analysis: Gronkowski remains the top tight end to target come draft day and will be off the board no later than mid second round.
San Francisco Quarterback Alex Smith to the Chiefs
As expected, Alex Smith has found his name on the tip of many rumors these days. Being the best option among potentially available quarterbacks, Smith has attracted the interest of many teams looking for quarterback improvement, but it looks like the Kansas City Chiefs had the best offer. The Chiefs reportedly have a deal in place that would send the 49ers two draft picks.
Fantasy Analysis: Smith still remains nothing better than a number two quarterback to be started under only the most extreme of situations.
The Rumor Mill
Detroit Lions to pursue Reggie Bush?
According to the Detroit Free Press, there are rumors circulating that the Lions are heavily interested in Miami running back Reggie Bush. When free agency starts in mid-March, Bush is expected to be available.
Fantasy Analysis: With the Lions already having Mike Leshoure as their featured back, it's hard to see Bush going to the Lions. If he were, there would be potential for big numbers due to the style of offense played but those numbers would be erratic at best. In a featured role, Bush is a solid number two running back.
