Donaire vs. Rigondeaux Fight Preview

Can the “Filipino Flash” continue his march towards boxing glory?

The only time we've seen a boxing match take place at the renowned Radio City Music Hall in New York City, a prime Roy Jones Jr. (who was recognized as the best boxer on the planet) dismantled David Telesco in 2000.

Now the stage is set for another boxing superstar looking to further his status as one of the top five pound for pound fighters in the sport today. The sensational Nonito Donaire takes on the legendary amateur standout Guillermo Rigondeaux.

The super bantamweight(122 lbs) bout will take place live this Saturday on HBO.

Let's breakdown what is sure to be a wonderful night for boxing.

Guillermo Rigondeaux

The 32-year-old Rigondeaux established himself as one of the greatest fighters to ever compete in the amateurs with 400-plus fights. A clever southpaw armed with tactical counter-punching, the Cuban born Rigondeaux looks to take a huge step up in competition by facing the deadly Donaire.

Rigondeaux may have a calm demeanor in the ring but do not be fooled by his sometimes criticized style, the man has massive power.

It's easier said than done but Rigondeaux will have to go to Donaire's body to find success in the bout. Engaging in a toe-to-toe war may not be in the cards for Rigondeaux but he must do everything in his power to get to his opponent's body. Once he establishes a measured body attack, Rigondeaux's straight left hand could end up being Donaire's unfastening.

Rigondeaux cannot afford to be as relaxed as he normally is and take a moment off in this fight because Donaire will be constantly searching for the big shot.

Nonito Donaire

The meteoric rise of the 30-year-old Donaire has been nothing short of remarkable and is only comparable to the aforementioned Jones. 2012's "Fighter of the Year" dazzles all privileged enough to witness such an extraordinary athlete. The power is colossal. The speed is blinding. The pure boxing is brilliant. Donaire has beaten a who's who of the smaller weight classes and this weekend he'll face his biggest test date.

Donaire will need to be patient while establishing the pace of the fight. His jab will probably be his most important tool against a boxer the likes of Rigondeaux. The jab will offset Rigondeaux's timing and help Donaire land his best punch – the left hook.

Donaire can't be overly aggressive against the counter-puncher but he must test his chin. Rigondeaux's ability to take a shot is somewhat suspect and if there's anyone who can test that theory it's the "Filipino Flash".

The Bottom Line

Folks, this is boxing's best. A compelling chess match mixed with explosive consequences and Radio City Music Hall? Are you kidding me?

We expect a technical fight at the beginning and a vicious ending for one man. Both men have respectively contain great power in their fists but put it this way. If Rigondeaux has dynamite in his hands then Donaire has two nuclear warheads aiming for the target.
