Adrien Broner Full Of Surprises

"The Problem" was just that, but lived up to his hype on Saturday night, which included one grand finale after the fight.

"I'm on to the lightweights. DeMarco can get it. Marquez can get it. Brandon Rios, we can meet at a catchweight and you can come get it next." – Adrien Broner 7.21.12

Adrien "The Problem" Broner (24-0, 20 KOs) has delivered another stellar performance in the midst of turmoil and controversy that ensued last weekend. Broner became the first to stop Vicente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KOs), who on paper, was Broner's toughest challenge to date. The real fight however took place before the opening bell even sounded.

"The Problem" had his own problems making weight the day before when he came in 3.5 pounds over the junior lightweight limit. Because of this he was stripped of his WBO 130-pound title and had to agree not to weigh more than 140 pounds at the second weigh in on fight day. Broner did not honor the agreement when he weighed in at 143 pounds. The fight world went bonkers as rumors swirled amongst multiple social media platforms that the fight would be called off. About five hours before show time I received confirmation that the fight would still be happening.

The fight started slow in the first round as both men hesitated to push the action.

Broner controlled the distance with his phenomenal jab in the second as he began to find the range. Broner stung Escobedo with left hooks and right hands. In the third round Escobedo attempted to open up and ended up landing a few hooks that had no effect on the now former champion. In the fourth Escobedo's nose got bloodied up by a combination of stiff jabs and sweeping left hooks.

In what proved to be the final round, the fifth round saw Broner walking his man down as he fired his sharp jab followed by hard rights. Broner battered Escobedo into retreat as he landed a hard uppercut that snapped the former Olympian's head back. Escobedo covered up while he was leaning against the ropes and Broner smelled the blood. Broner let his hands go as trainer Joel Julio saved his fighter after throwing the towel in. Broner walked away with a 5th round stoppage.

Escobedo had the opportunity to pull out of the fight against the much bigger Broner from Friday/Saturday's weigh-in blunder but chose to fight instead. When asked during the post fight interview if Broner had an unfair advantage by ignoring the aforementioned agreement Escobedo offered zero excuses. "He felt stronger, but I can't determine that," said Escobedo."I came in the ring determined, but I didn't do my part. He was the better man tonight."

Adrien Broner continued his tradition of post fight antics after getting down on one knee to make a proposal to his new girlfriend. However, this wasn't the type of proposal you'd expect. Broner got down on one knee and simply asked "Can you brush my hair?"

Adrien Broner: Classless or class act? I choose C – A fantastic fighter.
