The Toronto Argos came out on top against the Calgary Stamps this past weekend at the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup, winning 35-22, and while the overall English ratings were up the national average of television viewers fell short.
According to stats by BBM Canada (as reported by The Canadian Press), an average audience of 5.8 million viewers watched the battle on TSN and RDS. Some 5.5 million viewers were watching on TSN, which is the largest English audience for the game since a new ratings measurement system was put into effect, but the overall average fell short of the 6.1 million total viewers who watched Montreal beat Saskatchewan shortly after the new system was introduced three years ago.
Yet it was noted that overall, numbers for the 100th Grey Cup were up 28 per cent from the 4.6 million who tuned in last year.
On another note, Justin Bieber was booed during his halftime performance while Canadian icon Gordon Lightfoot was praised and applauded. "Not a real big fan of Justin Bieber, sorry," said 52-year-old Johanna Ellis of Kitchener, Ont. (as cited by another CP article). "It's not a very good choice in a stadium full of football fans."
