Last week, Hank Dolworth and Britt Pollack drove off into the proverbial sunset. And sadly, it may be the last time we see them onscreen.
FX has officially canceled "Terriers" after a single season. The series was created and produced by Ted Griffin ("Oceans 11") along with Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") and starred Donal Logue as Dolworth and Michael Raymond-James as Pollack. The duo formed an unlicensed P.I. firm which investigated a deadly conspiracy that threatened to destroy their town while the pair attempted to rebuild their own shattered lives.
Despite high critical praise, "Terriers" failed to draw in a large audience. At an average of 970,000 viewers, it was FX's lowest rated series to date. It also had a widely maligned P.R. campaign which infamously focused on a small dog instead of the two stars. The title itself was also reportedly confusing to some prospective viewers.
Over at Deadline, FX President John Langraf strenuously defended his marketing team's efforts.
"From my standpoint, the marketing department of FX has taken a little bit of unfair knocks for the lack of performance of the show," said Langraf. "I don't think there is anybody to blame. It's hard to explain why people didn’t watch."
"If I objectively believed that the reason the show didn’t launch was that we failed to tell viewers what it was about - a scruffy buddy detective show - that we had convinced them that the show was about dog fighting, I would've picked it up," added Landgraf. "I love the show. Sometimes there is a poor correlation between creative and commercial success, but we will keep swinging."
Landgraf also revealed that if the series went into a second season, the title would have been changed to "Terriers: PI."
Ryan also offered his thoughts on the cancellation of "Terriers."
"Thanks for all the condolences, 'Terriers' fans," wrote Ryan. "Ultimately, we couldn't get enough people to watch. Don't blame FX. They're still 1st class."
