Looks like Showtime can't give up its dark passenger any more than Dexter Morgan can.

Showtime has officially announced that "Dexter" will return for another season. The series stars Michael C. Hall in the title role, a police blood splatter expert who moonlights as a killer who preys upon criminals who escape the reach of the law. "Dexter" recently posted its second highest ratings ever on the tenth episode of the fifth season, which was seen by 2.54 million viewers.

“'Dexter' is the best suspense drama on television,” said Showtime's President of Entertainment, David Nevins. “To grow its audience so significantly in its fifth season is an enormous accomplishment by this amazing cast and crew. This is the easiest decision I’ve made since I got to Showtime.”

Last year at the Emmy Awards, the fourth season of "Dexter" received seven nominations, including a leading actor nod for Hall and an Outstanding Guest Star award for John Lithgow, who won for his riveting portrayal of the Trinity killer. Steve Shill also picked up the Emmy for Best Direction in a Drama series.

The fifth season of "Dexter" finds the killer teaming up with a young woman named Lumen (Julia Stiles) while attempting to take down the men who tortured and raped her, including the powerful motivational speaker, Jordan Chase (Jonny Lee Miller). Meanwhile, a corrupt cop named Liddy (Peter Weller) is on to Dexter's nocturnal activities and may prove to be an even more dangerous adversary than Chase himself. Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Vélez, David Zayas and James Remar round out the rest of the cast.

The fifth season finale will air next Sunday, December 12 on Showtime. And the producers of "Dexter" have already promised that the finale will rival last season's cliffhanger, which found Dexter standing over his wife's murdered body.
