For the last few years, fans in the United Kingdom have actually gotten to see new Christmas episodes of "Doctor Who" on the day itself. And finally, fans in America will be able to see them on the same day as well.

BBC America has announced that this year's "Doctor Who" Christmas special will air in the U.S. on Christmas night at 9PM ET. In an episode entitled "A Christmas Carol," the Doctor (Matt Smith) and his newly wed companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) are taken on a "[Charles] Dickens-inspired adventure."

"It's all your favorite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. And ... oh, you'll see," said "Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, who also wrote the holiday episode. "I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbors loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically."

Michael Gambon (from the "Harry Potter" films) and opera singer Katherine Jenkins also guest star in the episode.

The sixth season of "Doctor Who" is currently in production, with the two part season opener being filmed in the U.S. for the first time. To kick off the promotion for the new season, Smith was the main guest on last night's episode of the "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."

Ferguson, who is apparently a big "Doctor Who" fan, devoted his entire show to the subject, including an extended interview with Smith which you can see below.
