Gemini Award Nominations Announced

`Flashpoint` tops the list for the second year in a row.

Last Tuesday at a downtown hotel, journalists gathered to listen as the list of nominations for the annual Gemini Awards was announced – the drama “Flashpoint” is leading the pack with 15 nods (it topped the list of nominees last year as well), including one for best dramatic series, and it was followed closely by coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, which earned 13 nominations.

“Bloodletting And Miraculous Cures,” “Guns,” “Stargate Universe,” and “The Summit” are each up for awards in nine categories, while the Winnipeg-based HBO Canada comedy “Less Than Kind” and the six-part documentary series “Love, Hate and Propaganda” each received eight nods. The highly-anticipated CBC mini-series “Keep Your Head Up, Kid: The Don Cherry Story” also received seven noms.

“Over the past 25 years, we have witnessed dramatic changes in the Canadian television industry. The stories that we tell and the ways in which we tell those stories have evolved alongside the technological advancements that have altered the way we watch TV,” said Sara Morton, CEO, Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, in a press release. “This year’s nominations reflect an industry that is confident and flourishing. Our shows are successful here in Canada and around the world. We are proud to celebrate this year’s achievements as well as pay tribute to the shows and colleagues that have paved the way for this year’s nominations.”

The Gemini Awards, which recognizes the year’s best in Canadian English-language television and will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year, will be held in Toronto in November.
