One of the most popular television programs on APTN (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network), “Cashing In,” just began production on its third season. Set in southern Manitoba, the show explores the world of First Nations Gaming by profiling casino mogul Matthew Tommy, who recently bought the gaming palace North Beach Casino and is working at making it the most successful casino in North America.
In the midst of trying to conquer the gaming world, Tommy is also in a tumultuous relationship with his son Justin, who in the third season is faced with the difficult decision of taking over the North Beach Casino after his father has been shot and wounded.
The lead character of Matthew Tommy is played by Northwest Territories’ actor Eric Schweig, who has appeared in the flick “Big Eden” (for which he won a Grand Jury Award for Outstanding Actor in a Feature Film) as well as on TV’s “Blackstone,” “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” and “Indian Summer: The Oka Crisis” (mini-series). The hit show also stars Karen Holness (“Fringe,” “iPod”), Glen Gould (“Diamonds,” “Da Vinci's City Hall”), and Wesley French (“The American Experience," “Freedom Riders” the mini-series) as Justin Tommy.
“’Cashing In’ ups the ante in First Nations programming with lots of glitz, glamour and greed,” wrote Alison Gilmor of CBC News after the season 2 premiere. “Don’t expect the gritty urban feel of Moccasin Flats or the earnest, plaid-shirted tone of ‘North of 60.’ Set at a gaming palace on Stonewalker First Nation, a fictional southern Manitoba reserve, ‘Cashing In’ is about good-looking people behaving badly.”
After two successful seasons, “Cashing In” recently began shooting in various remote areas of Manitoba, with plans on wrapping up production by the third week of September.
