Although director Steven Spielberg already has a busy TV development slate with "Terra Nova" at Fox and "Fallen Skies" at TNT, that hasn't stopped him from picking up another potential franchise.

Spielberg is joining forces with "Fringe" co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to adapt Joe Hill's "Locke & Key" as a television series, according to New York Magazine. Fox is also reportedly already in discussions to develop the series with Spielberg's DreamWorks TV.

While Spielberg cemented his reputation as a film legend with "Jaws," "Raiders of the Last Ark," "E.T." and "Schindler's List;" Kurtzman and Orci are currently among the hottest screenwriters in Hollywood due to their work on the "Star Trek" reboot and the "Transformers" franchise. The duo are also producing the "Hawaii 5-0" remake on CBS in the fall.

"Locke & Key" was first published in 2008 by IDW. The series was written and created by Joe Hill — the son of Stephen King, who has established his own reputation as one of the top horror novelists — with art by Gabriel Rodriguez.

The story centers on the Locke family following the brutal murder of their father. After the family moves to a mansion in Maine, the youngest of the Locke children discovers supernatural doorways to other worlds that ultimately endanger the entire family.

Dimension had previously secured the film and television rights to "Locke & Key" with a potential feature franchise in mind before the rights went to DreamWorks TV. Thanks to the involvement of Kurtzman and Orci, 20th Century Fox TV is also co-producing the potential TV series; which increases its chances of ending up on Fox.

Josh Friedman ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") is also on board as an executive producer and a writer.
