Newfoundland and Labrador-based detective drama/comedy “Republic of Doyle,” which debuted in the CBC this past January, has been picked up by Australian network ABC. It’s already being aired across the globe in countries like the United Kingdom, Turkey, France, Spain, Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

The show follows father-and-son private investigator team Malachy and Jake Doyle, played by Sean McGinley (“The Running Mate” and “Wild Decembers”) and Allan Hawko (“ZOS: Zone of Separation” and “Quiet at Dawn”), who is also a writer and producer of the popular home-grown television program. Their official website describes the show as a combination of the retro-cool crime vibe of classic investigative shows like “Rockford Files” with the contemporary dramatic/comedic edge of “Rescue Me” and “Californication,” producing a blend of intriguing episodic mysteries woven with the always evolving (and sometimes regressing) relationship turmoil and dynamics of the fiery Doyle clan. The one-hour comedic drama takes a peek into the lives of a not-so-everyday family with problems trying to make it all work as they run a very uncommon family business – a gumshoe racket in St. John's, Newfoundland – out of a very full house.

During its debut season, the show received an average of one million viewers a week. It was picked up by the CBC for a second season just months after the series premiere.

“Republic of Doyle” will air after another CBC original show, “Being Erica,” on Australia’s ABC network. Season 2 is already being filmed right now in Newfoundland and will hit Canadian airwaves in January 2011.
