While the "Battlestar Galactica" spinoff "Caprica" hasn't yet matched the success of its parent show in the ratings, there are positive signs which could indicate that the series may get a second season.
"I can't speak for everyone, or anyone in fact, but I like what I'm seeing," said an unnamed NBC Universal source at Airlock Alpha. "This is the kind of deep, sophisticated program that gets a channel attention, just like what 'Battlestar' has done for us in recent years."
"Caprica" is set several decades before the events of "Battlestar Galactica" and features a more grounded look at a society where the level of technology is quickly escalating out of control. The series is primarily told from the perspective of two families: The Graystones and the Adamas. Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales lead the cast as Daniel Graystone and Joseph Adama, respectively. Alessandra Torresani, Paula Malcomson, Magda Apanowicz, Sasha Roiz and Polly Walker also star in the series.
When asked why "Stargate Universe" has already received a second season pickup while "Caprica" has not, the source replied "The two can't be compared. "We have to deal with MGM for 'SGU,' and their production practices are a bit different from what we have here."
The report also notes that with the acquisition of "WWE Smackdown," SyFy's original programing night will move from Friday to Tuesday, which could temper ratings expectations and allow "Caprica" more time to be discovered by potential viewers.
"Caprica" is also owned by NBC Universal, which gives the SyFy network a more vested interest in the show and allows it to receive revenue through other media, including iTunes and DVD sales.
An official announcement on the fate of "Caprica" may come as soon as next month. The remaining episodes of the first season are expected to begin airing later this year.
