Recently the nominees for the annual Leo Awards were officially announced, recognizing programs in 13 different categories, from dramas and documentaries to animation and web series. Another 62 Craft awards will also be given out during the two days of festivities to honour accomplishments in direction, screenwriting, cinematography, picture editing, overall sound, sound editing, musical score, production design, costume design, make-up, visual effects, stunt coordination, and performance or host(s).
All of the nominees were voted on – the ballots of 45 jurors who adjudicated 663 eligible entries comprised of 114 Program and 549 Craft entries were tabulated in order to come up with the final list of award candidates.
The three-hour docudrama “Darwin's Brave New World” about biologist Charles Darwin was nominated in several categories including best documentary series, cinematography, sound editing, and musical score. However, perhaps it was prominence of sci-fi TV shows in the list of television nominees that most notably shows the direction in which TV is going – the two sci-fi programs “Stargate Universe” and “Sanctuary” each received 17 awards nods, while the superman-based “Smallville” also raked in six.
In the area of movies, “The Thaw” and “Alice” were nominated for 13 awards each, including best feature-length film (they’ll go head-to-head against “A Shine of Rainbows,” “Cole” and “Excited”).
“Artistic excellence is alive and well in BC,” said Leo Awards president Walter Daroshin in a press release on their official site. “The film and television industry continues to be a driving force in the economy and creative sector of this province, and our 2010 nominees are testament to that.”
The awards ceremonies will take place on June 4 and 5. For a complete listing of nominees or for more info, visit www.leoawards.com.
