Web sensation “Auto-Tune the News” and comedian Zach Galifianakis' "Between Two Ferns" were among the nominees announced Monday for the second annual Streamy Awards, to be held April 11 in Hollywood.
The Streamy Awards were first presented in 2009 in respect to the emergence of web video as a respected medium. In the past two years alone, the internet has exploded with incredible content and become a much more accepted entertainment medium on a widespread scale, and the Streamy Awards reflects this new media uprising.
This year, International Academy of Web Television has expanded its categories and pooled more than150,000 public submissions, covering 2,000 original shows, that were whittled down to a mere 100 nominees. The nominees were released this week, featuring many favorites and several underdogs in various categories.
There are twelve new categories in the mix this year, including a new one for the Companion Web Series - shows that have spun off of existing TV, film or gaming properties like The Office or Heroes web series. Other new additions include Best Vlogger, Best New Web Series, Best Foreign Web Series and Best Branded Entertainment Web Series.
Dramatic crime series “The Bannen Way” earned seven nominations, including Best Drama, Best Directing and Best Male Actor in a Drama. "The Guild," a series about a group of online gamers, is up for six. “Auto-Tune the News” earned four.
"I'm truly impressed with the outstanding quality of this year's Streamy nominees," said IAWTV Chairman, Michael Wayne. "It's a testament to how far the online video industry has come and a great predictor of where we're headed."
You can check out all of the nominations on the Streamy Awards website (www.streamys.org), which also provides links to all of the nominated web content so that you can take a look for yourself to see who is the best out there.
Kevin Pollak's "Chat Show" got three Streamy noms, and the actor got another one for his role in the ensemble "Easy to Assemble."
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog isn't in the running this year, making it anyone's game across the categories. The Joss Whedon musical rocked last year's awards with seven Streamys.
The Streamy Awards ceremony is set for April 11, 2010 at the Music Box / Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood. The live internet broadcast of the show will begin at 5:30 PM (PT) with the red carpet pre-show beginning at 4:00 PM (PT). The Streamys are co-hosted by Tubefilter and NewTeeVee.
