The Best Frakkin Show on TV

A look at Battlestar Galactica in pop culture.

With the end of one of the best shows on TV and arguably one of the Best Science Fiction shows ever, we decided to take a look at some of the many references to Battlestar Galactica (BSG) on in pop culture. We are going to look at our favorite mentions in TV shows and film.  Movies like Lucky Number Slevin, TV shows like 30 Rock and CSI have made subtle and not so subtle references to Battlestar Galactica.

Check out our collection of BSG pop culture references: Battlestar Galactica: The Best Frakkin show on TV.

30 Rock

30 Rock - BSG

30 Rock is known for its frequent references to science fiction on the show but rarely has the show been as blatant in its display of affection as their reference to Battlestar Galactica. In the episode “The Ones”, Salma Hayek wears a T-shirt with the words, "What the Frak?!” on the front and the Colonial logo on the back. Frak is a common expletive on BSG and was quickly noticed by fans of the show.

The Office

The Office - BSG

In the episode “Business Ethics” series regulars, John Krasinski and Ed Helms discuss the previous night’s episode of Battlestar Galactica. The exchange is funny because Krasinski’s character (Jim) intentionally gives a wildly inaccurate description of the show, mixing elements from Harry Potter, the original Battlestar Galactica TV series, Star Wars and even Lord of the Rings.

The Venture Brothers

The Venture Brothers - BSG

The Venture Brothers is an animated series that regularly spoofs animation and comic characters. In the episode "The Family That Slays Together, Stays Together: Part 2", the character General Treister mentions that he regularly records Battlestar Galactica.

Big Bang Theory

Big Bang Theory - BSG

The comedy Big Bang Theory follows two very nerdy Caltech students and their attractive neighbor. The show has referenced Battlestar Galactica more than once. In the pilot of the show, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) wants to watch season 2 of BSG with the commentary. Later in the second season episode, “The Dead Hooker Juxtaposition”, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) offers to watch BSG with the guys.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - BSG

As the lone drama on the list, CSI seemed like an unlikely candidate for this list. The episode "A Space Oddity", contained several direct and indirect references to the show including cameos by show creator, Ron Moore (pictured above), actresses Grace Park and Kate Vernon. In a thematic portrayal of initial fan fears on the BSG remake; a fan (Ron Moore) of the fictional show “Astro Quest” condemns the plans to remake the series.
