Trey Parker and Matt Stone will continue to write, direct and edit each episode for the Emmy-winning show. "Three more years of 'South Park' will give us the opportunity to offend that many more people," Stone says. "And since Trey and I are in charge of the digital side of 'South Park,' we can offend people on their cell phones, game consoles, and computers too. It's all very exciting for us."
In a departure from the Simpsons-esque world where nobody ages and everybody looks the same, the four main characters in South Park – Kyle, Stan, Kenny, and, of course, Cartman – have all matured considerably with each season. As the technology used to produce South Park has evolved, so have the characters, in a way that suits the chronology of the show. They haven’t grown much, and they still wear the same damn clothes they’ve been wearing since 1997, but the boys’ voices and attitudes have evolved quite a bit from the first season to the current twelfth. It’s one way to keep the show fresh, and avoid repeating plotlines or, worse yet, stealing from the Simpsons. (An episode in season 6 addressed the issue, appropriately titled “The Simpsons Already Did It”)
In addition, Comedy Central will launch South Park Digital Studios with Parker and Stone, creating a Los Angeles-based digital animation studio that will over see South Park production and generate new projects.
New South Park episodes begin on Oct.19 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), so mark your calendars, stoners!
