Catherine Tate Returns To ‘The Office’

The former "Doctor Who" actress re-materializes at Dunder Mifflin.

Last spring, James Spader's Robert California won the coveted manger position formerly held by Michael Scott (Steve Carell) on "The Office;" at least until California somehow talked his way into becoming the CEO of Sabre, Dunder  Mifflin's parent company. However, one of the other prominent candidates for the job is now set to return as well.

NBC has announced that Catherine Tate will reprise her role as Nellie Bertram, a character who briefly appeared in the seventh season finale as the favored candidate of former Sabre CEO Jo Bennett (Kathy Bates). In fact, it's Nellie's close relationship with Jo that allows her to return as a "misguided" special projects manager.

The network categorized Tate as having a major recurring role; which means she should be in several episodes during the second half of the eighth season.

“Catherine is hysterical,” said "The Office" showrunner, Paul Lieberstein. “We introduced her briefly in last season’s finale and knew she had to be a part of the show somehow. We’ll meet her again as corporate’s special projects manager, and her relationship with Robert California will be far from professional.”

In the U.S., Tate is best known for her role as Donna Noble (pictured above) during the fourth season of "Doctor Who," in addition to her supporting roles in "Gulliver's Travels" and "Monte Carlo." But in the United Kingdom, Tate starred in "The Catherine Tate Show," which won numerous awards during its run on the BBC.

Tate has also appeared in films like "Mrs. Ratcliffe's Revolution," "66" and "Starter for Ten," as well as major theatrical productions of "Much Ado About Nothing,"  "Under the Blue Sky," "Some Girls" and "A Servant to Two Masters."

Given the time frame of this announcement, Tate's return to "The Office" should occur early in 2012.
