'Homeland,' 'Community' & 'Sherlock' Dominate Critics' Choice TV Awards

At last night's 2nd annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards, a few unexpected series walked away with the top prizes.

Showtime's "Homeland" was named best drama, while series star Claire Danes also claimed best drama actress. AMC's "Breaking Bad" swept both the best drama actor and best supporting actor in a drama. with wins for Bryan Cranston and Giancarlo Esposito; respectively. Christina Hendricks from "Mad Men" was named best supporting actress in a drama.

In comedy. "Community" was a surprise winner for best comedy. Series star Joel McHale took the stage to accept the award and he made a point to thank the absent Dan Harmon for creating "the greatest show on television." On twitter, Harmon acknowledged that his absence wasn't his idea: “Congrats, Community, and thank you, critics. Sorry I was unable to have been invited!”

"Modern Family" took both supporting comedy acting awards, with Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen; while Louis C.K. was named best comedy actor of "Louie." For best comedy actress, Amy Poehler ("Parks & Recreation") and Zooey Deschanel ("New Girl") shared the award in a tie.

BBC's "Sherlock" was also a big winner of the night, taking home best actor in a miniseries/movie for series star Benedict Cumberbatch and as well as the award for best miniseries/movie. FX's "Archer" also won for best animated series.

Given the surprising lineup of winners as selected by the TV critics, there is some speculation that these awards may be an indication of how the Emmy nominations will fare later this summer. Both "Homeland" and "Community" are Emmy dark horses, but their respective wins could propel them to wider recognition at TV's top awards ceremony.
