Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's "Powers" languished for years in development as a feature film at Sony before shifting over to FX as a potential TV series in 2009. But perhaps the past was prologue.
Last year, the "Powers" pilot was sent back for rewrites and reshoots. And while screenwriter and executive producer Charles "Chick" Eglee completed the new "Powers" revisions, FX apparently let the actors' contracts lapse while making a decision about whether to proceed with the reshoots.
Bendis and Eglee have insisted for months that "Powers" was still alive at FX. Earlier this week, Variety reported that FX isn't quite ready to give up on "Powers," but it's unknown when or if the network will move forward. But with the release of the cast — including Jason Patric, Lucy Punch, Charles S. Dutton, Titus Welliver and Carly Foulkes — the "Powers" pilot would have to be completely reshot.
The original "Powers" comic book series by Bendis and Oeming follows a former superhero turned homicide detective as he and his partner investigate superhuman related violent crimes. Given the subject matter, it seemed like a good fit for FX.
One of the major unanswered questions about this project is: what was so objectionable about the "Powers" pilot that FX would rather start over completely rather than go forward with the cast that had already been assembled? The way that FX has dragged its feet on "Powers" is puzzling and it will ultimately cost the network even more money if the show finally escapes development hell.
Now that "Powers" would have to be completely recast, who would you pick as Detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim? Sound off in the comment section below!
