The CW Develops Modern Day ‘Alice in Wonderland’ TV Series

Chad Hodge and Joseph McGinty Nichol reinvision Alice as a police detective in Los Angeles.

Earlier this year, the CW began developing "Sleepy Hollow" as a potential TV series set in modern times. And apparently, Ichabod Crane isn't the only one in line for a reboot at the network.

Deadline is reporting that the CW is developing "Wunderland," a contemporary take on the classic novel, "Alice in Wonderland." In "Wunderland," the lead female character is a detective in present day Los Angeles who "discovers another world that exists under the surface" of her city. The premise seems to be similar to both NBC's "Grimm" and the CW's upcoming reboot of "Beauty and the Beast."

"Wunderland" is being written by Chad Hodge, who created "The Playboy Club" for NBC last season and "Runaway" for the CW back in 2006. Hodge has also previously written for "Tru Calling" and "Veritas: The Quest." Hodge is also executive producing "Wunderland" alongside Joseph McGinty Nichol; who is perhaps better known as McG. Nichol is primarily a film director notable for helming the two Charlie's Angels films, Terminator Salvation, We Are Marshall and This Means War.

However, Nichol has also found success producing several TV series, including "The O.C.," "Chuck" and "Supernatural," in addition to "Fastlane," and "Human Target."

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote the original "Alice in Wonderland" novel under the pen name Lewis Carroll in 1865. Thanks to the story's enduring popularity, Alice's adventures have been adapted to film and television numerous times, including the 2010 Tim Burton version (pictured above) and the famous Walt Disney animated movie; which were both called "Alice in Wonderland." It's not clear if the lead character of "Wunderland" will also be called Alice, but presumably the creatures of Wonderland will appear within the series.
