Will Hugh Laurie Sail The 7 Seas In NBC’s ‘Crossbones’?

Reports suggest that the “House” star may soon return to television.

Last spring, Hugh Laurie ended a memorable eight season run as Dr. Gregory House on the Fox drama, “House.” But Laurie may be back on television much sooner than anyone anticipated.

Deadline is reporting that Laurie is in negotiations to star in NBC’s upcoming pirate series, “Crossbones” as the infamous Captain Edward Teach aka Blackbeard.

“Crossbones” takes place during the 1700s on the island of New Providence, where Blackbeard “reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors.” The series was created by Neil Cross (“Luther”) and it is set to run for a first season of 10 episodes on NBC.

NBC’s desire to get Laurie on board “Crossbones” is completely understandable. It would give the series an immediate sense of legitimacy and buzz while also giving the network a major selling point to potential viewers and advertisers. It’s hard not to make parallels with Disney hiring Johnny Depp to play Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. An established leading actor can always help bring in an audience.

The biggest question of this story is: why Laurie would immediately jump back into TV after spending so much time in the same role on “House”? For starters, 10 episodes is a much smaller commitment to make than a full season of 22 or 24 episodes. NBC could also be offering Laurie a comparable deal to what he made on “House.” Or perhaps Laurie just wants to have the fun of playing a pirate.
