STARZ Considers a Julius Caesar Spinoff From ‘Spartacus’

The premium cable network is reportedly interested in keeping the franchise alive even after the upcoming final season.

If you’re a fan of history (or even the Stanley Kubrick Spartacus film) then you already know that “Spartacus: War of the Damned” will probably not end well for the leading characters. Regardless, STARZ may have a way to keep the franchise going even beyond the final season.

According to Deadline, STARZ is considering a proposal from “Spartacus” executive producer Robert Talpert that would focus on Gaius Julius Caesar, who will be introduced this season as one of Spartacus’ new adversaries. Todd Lasance will portray Caesar during “War of the Damned,” and presumably he would be asked to reprise his role if the spinoff goes forward.

While there is apparently some debate as to whether the historical Caesar actually took part in the Third Servile War, the story of young Caesar’s rise to power is more than enough to carry its own series.

STARZ is understandably reluctant to let “Spartacus” go away without something to replace it. “Spartacus” has been STARZ’ biggest original program to date with 6 million viewers per episode across all platforms. None of STARZ’s other original series have been able to match that success.

As announced earlier this year, “Spartacus” co-creator, Steven DeKnight is still working with STARZ on “Incursion,” a sci-fi drama which is said to be on a fast track for development at the network.

"Spartacus: War of the Damned" will premiere on Friday, January 25 2013.
