“Dexter” season 8 may be nine months away, but two of the new characters have been revealed in a TVLine report. The creative team behind the series is said to be searching for an actor in his forties to play Private Investigator Jacob Elroy, a former cop who went into business for himself. The other new role is Dr. Evelyn Vogel, a woman who is described as “a formidable and whip smart neuro-psychiatrist in her late 50s who assists the law in profiling criminals.”
TVLine hypothesizes that both Jacob and Dr. Vogel will be looking into the murder of Captain María LaGuerta (Lauren Vélez); which would put them directly at odds with Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter).
Although neither Jacob nor Vogel are apparently villain material (and neither is likely to be the Big Bad of the season), the seventh season of “Dexter” used LaGuerta as an adversary when she began digging into Dexter’s crimes as the Bay Harbor Butcher. There will probably still be bad guys for Dexter to kill in the new season, but at this point Dexter can function as both the hero and the villain of his own story.
Supposedly “Dexter” season 8 will bring the series to a close, but the record breaking ratings of the seventh season have sparked speculation that Showtime may want the series to continue for at least two more seasons.
“Dexter” season 8 is expected to debut in fall 2013.
