‘Axe Cop’ Debuts on Fox In July

The comic book adaptation will kick off Fox’s new Animation Domination High-Def lineup.

It’s been almost a year since Fox first revealed its plans to adapt Ethan and Malachai Nicolle’s comic “Axe Cop” as an animated series. But earlier today at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, Fox finally confirmed the premiere date for “Axe Cop” and two other animated series from its upcoming Saturday night programing block.

“Axe Cop” will debut on Saturday, July 27 as part of the new Animation Domination High-Def lineup that will run from 11PM to 12:30AM. “Axe Cop” and the other new shows in this block will all be 15 minutes long; which is similar to Adult Swim’s approach to original animated series.

The “Axe Cop” comic was created by the Nicolle brothers back in 2009 when Malachai was five and Ethan was 30. The title character of “Axe Cop” is described as “the most badass superhero who ever existed!” and the comic has been been critically acclaimed for its over-the-top style of humor.

Back in October, Fox released a test clip for the project with Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”) providing Axe Cop’s voice. Offerman’s name was omitted from the “Axe Cop” cast list released today, but since his wife, Megan Mullally (“Breaking In”) is listed among the cast, it seems likely that Offerman will remain involved.

Other cast members named for “Axe Cop” were Patton Oswalt, Peter Serafinowicz and Ken Marino with a guest star lineup that includes Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks from “Breaking Bad” and even Dan Harmon from “Community.”

“High School USA!” and an untitled show by Kenny and Keith Lucas were also confirmed as the other animated slated to premiere alongside “Axe Cop.” “High School USA!” was created by “Community” and “Moral Orel” veteran, Dino Stamatopoulos and features Vincent Kartheiser and Mandy Moore as relentlessly positive (and naive) students facing situations like “cyber-bullying,” “Adderall-addiction” and “embarrassing sexting incidents.”

The Lucas Brothers’ project features the stand-up comedy duo starring as a pair of scrawny identical twins who inherit a moving company from their uncle before finding themselves thrust into increasingly bizarre situations including “the threat of city-wide catastrophe, resolved only with the help of a once-famous ’90s wrestler.”
