Alex Kingston Takes Aim At ‘Arrow’

The “Doctor Who” actress steps into the role of Dinah Lance.

“Hello Sweetie!”

John Barrowman won’t be the only “Doctor Who” performer coming to “Arrow” this season.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Alex Kingston has signed on to recur on “Arrow” as Dinah Lance, the mother to Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) and the former wife of Detective Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne).

The report notes that Dinah returns to Starling City later this season after abandoning her family years before in the aftermath of her daughter, Sarah Lance’s demise on the ill-fated yacht trip with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).

Kingston is perhaps best known for playing River Song on “Doctor Who” as well as a long stint on “ER” as Dr. Elizabeth Corday. She also had guest roles in “CSI,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “NCIS” and “FlashForward” in addition to starring turns in “Hope Springs” and “Upstairs Downstairs.”

Fans of DC Comics should recognize that Dinah Lance is the name of Black Canary; which is the superheroine identity that Laurel will likely take on at some point during “Arrow’s” lifespan.

This isn’t the first time that the Black Canary character has been handled in a somewhat convoluted way in live action television. In the 2003 “Birds of Prey” TV series, Rachel Skarsten’s Dinah Redmond (or Dinah Lance) was technically filling the Black Canary role. However, Lori Loughlin eventually appeared as her mother, Carolyn Lance, and she had the powers and the costumed persona of Black Canary.

Kingston’s casting also continues “Arrow’s” trend of hiring popular genre actors. In addition to Barrowman, former “Farscape” star Ben Browder will guest star on this week’s episode of “Arrow.”
