The CW Renews ‘Arrow’ & ‘Supernatural’

“The Vampire Diaries” also gets a renewal as the CW apparently shifts towards more genre shows.

At the present, there are five dramas on the CW that may not get another season. But “Arrow” and “Supernatural” are not among the shows in trouble.

Earlier today, the CW granted very early pickups for “Supernatural,” “Arrow” and “The Vampire Diaries,” several months ahead of the fall 2013 schedule announcements. The move isn’t very shocking because all three of the series are among the CW’s most popular shows. The move to Wednesdays after the freshmen “Arrow” also revitalized “Supernatural” in the ratings as it heads into its ninth season next fall. “Arrow” will be getting its second season while “The Vampire Diaries” will enter its fifth season.

In a brief statement, the CW’s President, Mark Pedowitz wrote “We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit ‘Arrow’ and fan favorite ‘Supernatural’ on Wednesday night, and the continued success of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that. Not only do ‘Arrow,’ ‘Supernatural’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’ perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially.”

While the CW has largely favored female oriented soap operas, “Heart of Dixie,” “The Carrie Diaries” and “90210” are all questionable to return next fall due to sagging ratings. But even some genre shows like “Nikita” and “Beauty and the Beast” are also struggling to attract audiences.

On Deadline, it was noted that most of the CW’s pilots for next season have a decidedly genre flavor, including the revival of “The Tomorrow People,” the Hunger Games inspired “Selection” and “Amazon,” a Wonder Woman prequel series that remains in development despite not getting a pilot pick up. Because the CW’s current hits are all genre shows, it may explain the apparent shift away from soap operas.

The CW will announce its fall 2013 in early May.
