Joss Whedon Offers Some Updates on ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

The Avengers director addresses Cobie Smulders’ potential appearance and his focus on the new characters.

Last month, Cobie Smulders hinted that there have been talks for her to reprise her role as Maria Hill in the forthcoming “S.H.I.E.L.D.” TV project despite her commitment to a ninth and final season of “How I Met Your Mother.”

However, at last night’s Streamy Awards, The Avengers director, Joss Whedon downplayed the chances of Smulders appearing while leaving the door open for it to happen eventually.

While speaking with TVLine, Whedon noted that Smulders’ schedule would “permit very little [involvement], but if we can get a hold of her anytime, we will.”

“Right now, I want to involve people in the characters that we’ve created for the show,” explained Whedon, “and then we’ll worry about [bringing in other characters from the Marvel universe].”

Whedon also spoke about the tone of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” and how it differs from most of the TV landscape.
“I’m excited about the show because it’s a very hopeful show,” said Whedon. “It’s not about murder, and it’s not about crime, and it’s not people looking into their own belly buttons. It’s about people who are trying to help each other, and that’s one of the things I loved about comic books. They had costumes and the villains were cool, [but] they stood for something, and I like doing a show that does that.”

“S.H.I.E.L.D.” will feature Clark Gregg reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson alongside Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Elizabeth Henstridge as Gemma Simmons, Brett Dalton as Grant and Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz.

The “S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot reportedly wrapped shooting last week and it is one of the heavily favored shows to make ABC’s Fall 2013 lineup.
