Ever since it premiered on HBO, “True Blood” has used vampires as a metaphor for the civil rights/gay rights movement as the children of the night came out of the coffin in an attempt to live openly among humans.
The discrimination that vampires face on this show is all too familiar in our collective history. And the newest “True Blood” Season 6 trailer has some unsettling context as it shows a vampire being dragged to death by a vehicle as anti-vampire sentiment reaches an all-time high.
But the vampires have no one but themselves to blame. During the fifth season, the Vampire Authority bombed their own Tru Blood factories to encourage all vampires to feed on humans. Needless to say, a lot of people died in the ensuing chaos and humanity isn’t about to roll over without a fight.
Enter Governor Truman Burrell (Arliss Howard), one of “True Blood’s” newest adversaries. Either the governor is using his heated anti-vampire rhetoric to score political points or he truly believes in eradicating them as he endorses in the fiery speech glimpsed in the new trailer.
Regardless, a full fledged war between humanity and vampires has arrived. And not everyone is going to make it out alive… or undead.
“True Blood” returns to HBO on Sunday, June 16!
