Sofia Vergara wore a fabulous black dress to a coffee break with the Television Critics Association this summer. She said the dress was by Michael Kors but K-Mart would look hot on her. Modern Family is back for a second season after its Emmy win for Best Comedy Series and awards for Erik Stonestreet and writers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd (the other Christopher Lloyd).
CraveOnline: You look amazing. Is there anything you don’t look good in?
Sofia Vergara: Well, I don’t look that good in bathing suits anymore.
CraveOnline: But I’m sure it’s still awesome.
Sofia Vergara: Everything is still up there a little bit. Yeah, I would have to say it’s still awesome.
CraveOnline: Thank you for admitting that.
Sofia Vergara: I mean, I don’t have complaints but…
CraveOnline: Does it amuse you how great guys think you look?
Sofia Vergara: Yes and now more at this age. Before of course. Now I really appreciate it.
CraveOnline: What is the one thing people like myself don’t understand about Latin women?
Sofia Vergara: I don’t know you that well. I don't know what your problems are.
CraveOnline: I’m a white guy.
Sofia Vergara: No, I don’t know. I’ve been with many guys that understand me completely. I’ve been with Latin guys that don’t so.
CraveOnline: We don’t need you to run. You can just stand there.
Sofia Vergara: They called me from the show and said, “Do you mind if we put this ad?” I was like, “No,” but I really thought they were not going to put it. And then two days later everybody’s like, “Did you see what they did?” I’m like, “Oh my God!’” If you read it, you see that it says that the cast member can change. So I’m hoping it’s either Ty or Ed maybe.
CraveOnline: One episode that stood out to me was when Jay and Gloria covered for Manny’s dad. Do you think that’s the right thing to do, to cover that parent or let the kid know that his father might be unreliable?
Sofia Vergara: I think it depends. It depends on the situation. Of course first and most important is the kid’s mental health, the kid’s well being. For example with my kid, I was a divorced parent. I took my son to the United States and his father was in Colombia while he grew up. Sometimes his father couldn’t come to see him for whatever reason. Of course I would invent a million things to cover for him and make him still look good in front of his son.
CraveOnline: But that’s presumably a real customs and immigration issue. With Manny’s dad, he just went wherever he wanted to.
Sofia Vergara: Yeah, but I think in that specific situation, why not? You don’t want to hurt a kid’s feelings. It’s not necessary. I think as a human being, kids are not stupid. When they grow, they realize, they understand. Nobody has to tell you how your father is when he did things wrong or not. You see, then you know. You start maturing and you see my mom was good or my mom was bad. Yeah, when they’re kids, make it easier for them. They’re going to be suffering a lot when they’re adults with their own problems so why make them suffer now?
CraveOnline: How important is it for you to be portraying a mixed-race couple on TV?
Sofia Vergara: It’s fantastic. I hope that this new season of TV shows for all the networks, maybe they’ll try to have another Gloria in their cast or that some Latin actress got a job. That would be fantastic. It’s very difficult. Now, it’s less difficult than ever but it’s still, you cannot get as many roles as a normal American person. So for a black actor I’m sure it’s the same.
CraveOnline: Is there a line where you don’t want it to be all about race but you want it to be about cultural differences?
Sofia Vergara: Yeah, but it’s funny. I think cultural differences are funny. It’s a reality. I think there’s a lot of comedy in that so I think the writers have to take advantage of that.
CraveOnline: I hear you are going to be in the Smurfs movie. Are you a Smurf?
Sofia Vergara: No, no. I’m an executive, a makeup executive. We filmed already in New York during the spring and it’s coming out next summer. Hank Azaria is Gargamel. He looks unbelievable.
CraveOnline: What do you get to do with the Smurfs?
Sofia Vergara: Nothing really. All my scenes are with Gargamel and Neil Patrick Harris. There are Smurfs out there but I don’t see them so I never really have to talk to them which takes hours, those filming with animation.
CraveOnline: Are you part of his evil scheme?
Sofia Vergara: A little bit. She’s not bad but she’s a little bit confused of who he is.
