Kurt Sutter was about to leave the Fox/FX party with his lovely wife Katy Sagal, but they were gracious enough to stay for one more quick interview. We had a chance to reflect on Sons of Anarchy season two and look ahead to season three in an exclusive interview with the show’s creator and producer.
Crave Online: What an amazing second season. How do you feel about how it turned out?
Kurt Sutter: I’m thrilled. We’ve been doing what we’ve been doing there now since season one and people just finally figured out what we’re doing.
Crave Online: How did the season plan change from what you originally set out to do?
Kurt Sutter: It pretty much stayed on track. I kind of get a sense of what the next season is about halfway through the season before, at least broad strokes. We were able to do everything we wanted to do.
Crave Online: Do you have to top the previous season next year?
Kurt Sutter: You can’t really think of it in those terms because you’ll kill yourself. I think every season will be different. I think this season will be different just because the circumstances are going to be different so the tone will be a little bit different. I would think or I would hope that people think it’s as good, but I think it’ll be as different.
Crave Online: Do you enjoy thinking of wild, crazy things for Gemma to do?
Kurt Sutter: Of course, yes. We had a great time last year and it was an amazing journey we took her on. Yeah, I think this season, although it won’t be quite as physically devastating for her, there’s still going to be a lot of emotional things going on.
Crave Online: How hard is it to come up with threats to the SAMCRO gang when they’re such badasses?
Kurt Sutter: I think the issue is the lifestyle is such that it’s a very aggressive world and you can’t help but bump into things and knock them over and upset people. So I think just by the lifestyle itself, you’re always sort of creating conflict and antagonists for yourself.
Crave Online: Is there a way to introduce other activities besides guns?
Kurt Sutter: Yeah, I think so. I think we’ll continue to explore that. The interesting thing is they’ve had a lot of obstacles to that and they haven’t really flourished as gun runners really at all. So I think we’ll continue to have obstacles and we’ll find other ways to earn.
Crave Online: It looks amazing on Blu Ray.
Kurt Sutter: It’s great. The HD is great on Blu Ray.
Crave Online: Not all TV shows hold up. How did you get it to look so good?
Kurt Sutter: You know what? We shoot it in HD. The system we use is a Genesis system. I think it’s not the easiest digital camera to use but I think the quality is great. Yeah, it holds the Blu Ray great.
Crave Online: Has everybody gotten better on a bike?
Kurt Sutter: Everybody has gotten better except Ron got a little rusty because actually what happened was he had a permit but he never went for his license. So it expired so he had to stop riding the last couple episodes because legally he couldn’t be on the street. I just talked to him and he assured me that he’s going to have his license. The guys have gotten really good.
