Craig Ferguson ordered pizza for the television critics while he chatted about his late night talk show. There’s no major news, just a chance to catch up with Craig and have some real people food instead of Hollywood catering.
Crave Online: Who haven’t you had on that you want to have on?
Craig Ferguson: I’d love to have Sean Connery on but I don't know if that’ll happen.
Crave Online: Because of the skits you’ve done?
Craig Ferguson: No, I just don’t know if he’d do it.
Crave Online: Have you ever heard feedback from him?
Craig Ferguson: I don’t get involved in it.
Crave Online: Who have been your favorite guests and your worst?
Craig Ferguson: I can't talk about my favorite and worst guests because I like to think I'm a bit like a doctor. At a certain point there's a Hippocratic Oath. My favorite guest is Betty White, and my least favorite guest is an actor, who I'm not saying his name because f**k him.
Crave Online: How do you feel to finally be in HD?
Craig Ferguson: Yeah, it’s coming, isn’t it? September the 1st. HD doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s a technical thing. It’s like demographics. A lot of people know about it. I think it makes the picture better, right?
Crave Online: Will you take advantage of it on the show?
Craig Ferguson: I can’t imagine I’ll have the money for that kind of thing.
Crave Online: Do you think Paul McCartney hates you?
Craig Ferguson: Probably, yeah, wouldn’t you? I mean, I think he probably does and I feel awful, just awful about that.
Crave Online: He didn’t stop when he was on Letterman.
Craig Ferguson: Yeah, but I at least admit that I should stop and that’s a start. Admitting you have a problem is the first step.
Crave Online: What do you love most about your job?
Craig Ferguson: When you’ve got something to say you can say it. That, freedom of expression.
Crave Online: What are you proudest of so far?
Craig Ferguson: I don't know. That’s not for me to say. I don't know. My pilot’s license. I’m proud of that.
Crave Online: Would you like to have a bigger, fancier studio or could that diminish the feel?
Craig Ferguson: I think both. I think I’d worry about it but it would be nice to see what it’s like. It’s like, it’s kind of like if you ever had a car and it was a bit of a clunker but you love it, that’s my show. It’s a bit of a clunker but I know where everything is and I like it.
Crave Online: Will you interview yourself when your book comes out?
Craig Ferguson: I’m going to shamelessly promote it with graphics. I’ll get guests reading the extracts from the book on the show a little bit.
Crave Online: Why do some hosts fail at the interview? Do they not listen?
Craig Ferguson: Like I said, I don’t really watch. I have trouble with people who are bad talkers and it’s easy with people are good talkers. It’s like any kind of conversation really. There are people who are easy to talk to and people who are difficulty.
Crave Online: So it depends on the guest?
Craig Ferguson: Yeah, I think so.
Crave Online: Would you like to have a band?
Craig Ferguson: I said that the only way I could have a band that would work in the format of my show is if the band were crap. So if I have a band they’d have to really suck.
Crave Online: When James Frey was on, before he came on, did you have to guarantee him that you wouldn't "Oprah" him?
Craig Ferguson: I think the question you are asking me politely is can I read. And, yes, I read his book. And, no, I wouldn't accept any guest on the show ever with conditions like that. That's not acceptable to me, so no. He came on, and I liked him. I liked him, and I talked to him. I wasn't that interested in talking about A Million Little Pieces because I felt it had been done to death. And I had just finished reading the new book, so I wanted to talk about that, which is scandalous. Have you read it? Oh, you really should read it. He's a very bad boy. Yes, sir.
Crave Online: How scandalous is your book?
Craig Ferguson: My book is reasonably priced and available on September the 22nd. It's an autobiography, and I'm looking forward to reading it. It's an autobiography by someone in show business. I hear it's great. I love that. It's a little bit different from the James Frey thing in the sense that a lot of it, I just couldn't remember, so I made it up. But I admitted that right away. It's just the story of how I ended up here, which surprises me as much as anyone.
