10,000 Apply To Live In “Big Brother Canada” House

New reality show spinoff premieres on Slice next year.

The popular "Big Brother" reality TV franchise is coming north of the border, and more than 10,000 people have applied to be contestants on the new Slice series.

Taking part in a cross-country audition tour, which just wrapped up, producers of "Big Brother Canada" checked out potential participants in Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, and Toronto. They were vying for the 14 sports available on the show.

The premise of "Big Brother" is relatively simple: people live in a house wired with cameras that watch them 24/7 and they have absolutely no contact with the outside world. Every week the housemates compete in various competitions and vote off one contestant until a final person is left standing and takes home the $100,000 prize.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, executive producer of "Big Brother Canada" John Brunton is promising that "this group of houseguests will be completely unique, completely Canadian."

“Based on the excitement and passion of the thousands who have applied, we know that we’ll find a legendary group of intriguing characters and big personalities for the inaugural season,” said Barbara Williams, senior vice-president of content at Shaw Media, in an official press release.

The new show will debut on the Slice network in the spring of 2013.
