There's a new race that's shaping up north of the border – "The Amazing Race Canada" has been confirmed for CTV and will be filmed entirely on Canadian turf.
In an exclusive on-air message to Canadians during an episode of "The Amazing Race," host Phil Keoghan announced on behalf of CTV that the network has ordered the new Canadian-based series, which will be a Canadian-produced version of the hit international series. Though the series' specific destinations won't be revealed until it airs, Canada offers divergent topography and disparate locales that are bound to add to the excitement and complexity of the show and its challenges.
Casting, the host, and other details of the new reality show will be released in the coming weeks, the network said, and the series will be produced by the Toronto-based Insight Productions, responsible for other Canadian spinoffs like "Canadian Idol," "Canada's Got Talent" and the soon-to-be-released "Big Brother Canada." "The Amazing Race Canada" will air next summer.
"Canadians deserve their own summer version, distinct from what is seen in fall and winter," Phil King, president of CTV programming and sports, said in a release (as reported by The Canadian Press).
Bertram van Munster, co-creator of "The Amazing Race," said the Emmy Award-winning series is a great fit for Canada. "Canadians have embraced the franchise for over a decade, and also have been wildly enthusiastic about having a version produced in Canada," van Munster said (CP). "With the world's second largest country as its backdrop, 'The Amazing Race Canada' will offer a unique glimpse of the broad and diverse Canadian landscape and culture, while maintaining all of the excitement, spontaneity and challenge inherent in 'The Race.'"
