The Kill Point

Spike TV's eight part, damn near real time hostage drama, The Kill Point.
Iraq War Veterans rob a bank and (melo) drama ensues; That is the basic premise of The Kill Point. Most of the familiar elements of the hostage drama are here including; A charismatic bank robber, Local police vs the FBI, Hostages vs the bank robbers, Dog Day Afternoon style style populist speeches, the armed FBI agent inside the bank and a level headed (but unorthodox) hostage negotiator. Also thrown in for good measure are the ailing (and Gay) senor citizen, the cute chick in the green top, the overweight nerd/teenage computer hacker, the relative of someone important and the lady who has a crush on the bank robber.

The Kill Point has a great cast, John Leguizamo (Mr. Wolf) gives his usual best. Donnie Wahlberg does his best with his oddly named (Horst Cali) and odd acting Grammarphile hostage negotiator. Tobin Bell (Saw) does a great job in the little screen time he has as an important Real Estate magnate who uses some less than ethical methods to extract his daughter from the hostage situation. Another pleasant surprise is that several cast members from The Wire make appearances including J.D. Williams, Michael K. Williams (playing a talkative SWAT sniper) and Leo Fitzpatrick among others.

The pilot had a decent (but not great) start, although I thought the dialogue was stiff, the exposition was blatant and and the situations more than familiar. The episodes that followed did not have the same amount of exposition (for dummies) or the movie of the week dialogue. One thing I noticed is that ever since The Shield went on the air, "shit" and "asshole" have become very popular (i.e., overused) words on the various basic cable shoes and The Kill Point is no different. All of that aside, the mini series is at the very least an interesting summer show. You can check out the webisodes for some light backstory and secondary plot threads. In case you missed any of the episodes Spike will probably be showing tons of reruns leading up to the two hour season finale on Sunday, August 26th.
