Episode Title: 'Welcome to Bushwick a.ka. The Crackcident'
Writer: Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner
Director: Jody Lee Lipes
It was only a matter of time before the "girls" made their way to Bushwick and they made sure to bring their baggage with them. Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Hannah (Lena Dunhan) arrive at a warehouse party and quickly meet up with Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet). Jessa gets a text from a strange number, but instead of asking who it's from, she invites the mystery texter to the party. Of course, we all know it's Jeff, the father of the children she's babysits.
Marnie approaches Charlie (Christopher Abbot) after he and his band finish playing and drops all kinds of cliched post-breakup lines on him in somewhat smug fashion. Their amicable yet awkward reunion is quickly derailed when Charlie's new girlfriend jumps on him and asks Marnie if she's one of the "the real housewives." The incident ruins the night for Marnie by providing a much-needed reality check. She definitely dresses like "a real housewife."
Inevitably, Hannah spots Adam (Adam Driver) at the party while Jessa and Ray (Alex Karpovsky) realize Shoshanna mistook a crack pipe for pot. When Jeff (James LeGros) arrives, Jessa tasks Ray with taking over as Shoshanna's "crack spirit guide." It's a fateful pairing, as the wisecracking Ray (who was a comedy all-star in this episode) and the obliviously innocent Shoshanna might just be perfect for each other.
While Ray chases Shoshanna through the streets of Bushwick, Hannah learns from Adam's lesbian pal that he's in AA. Meanwhile, Jessa puts Jeff in line for a beating when she throws his bottle of wine in an alley and insults the two "crusty" punks she nearly hit.
Ray finally catches up with Shoshanna, now pants-less, giving her an opportunity to practice her self-defense skills on her interim "crack spirit guide." After taking a knee to the nuts, Ray agrees to let Shoshanna massage his groin in a "non-sexual way." It's a sweet moment for these two. Perhaps Ray will help Shoshanna finally shake her virgin status.
Back at the party, Marnie spots Hannah's gay ex-boyfriend, Elijah and immediately starts unloading on him about Charlie. When Marnie accuses Hannah, who's solely focused on Adam, of being selfish, Elijah calls her out on her own self-absorbed behavior. However, Marnie takes it too far when she tells Elijah his voice sounds like "a bag of dying babies." He promptly slaps her in the face and Marnie vows to never return to Bushwick. We know that's not possible in the circle these girls hang with, but it's definitely been a rough night for Marnie.
Now with a new respect for Adam, Hannah decides to join him on a "scraping" mission to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Riding shotgun on his bicycle proves too scary for Hannah, however and she demands he stop to let her off. When he does, Hannah falls flat on her face. No one will ever accuse Adam of being a gentleman.
After taking a punch on the dance floor, Jessa and Jeff are in the ER, tending to his bloody nose. Jeff cries it out for a bit and then asks Jessa to go home with him. She refuses, realizing it's time to stop her reckless behavior. Jeff, in turn, realizes the inappropriateness of their friendship before heading home. Is this the end of their morally spotty friendship? Probably not. Both Jeff and Jessa have grown a bit from knowing each other. How much is the question.
Hannah confronts Adam about AA and he tells her he never mentioned it because she never asked. In fact, Adam is convinced Hannah has no real interest in him as a person. Fittingly, Marnie, whose own pity party went bust, arrives in a taxi to rescue her best friend from her non-boyfriend. Before she heads to the cab, Adam asks Hannah if she wants him to be her "f***ing boyfriend." It's as heartfelt a romantic gesture as she's ever going to get from him. Apparently having taken Adam up on his offer, a beaming Hannah, her best friend, her new boyfriend(?) and his bicycle head home in the cab. Obviously, Marnie's paying the fare on this one, in more ways than one.
