VEEP 1.06 ‘Baseball’

Selina strikes out with the Orioles while her team panics over a pregnancy scare.

Episode Title: 'Baseball'

Writers: Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche

Director: Armando Iannucci

Now that Clean Jobs is dead, Vice President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and staff attend the launch of her new, and very much unwanted "Get Moving!" healthy eating initiative at Baltimore's Camden Yards. With industry big wigs scoffing at trays of veggies and falafel while Dan (Reid Scott) schmoozes it up, using words like "food-nominal," the whole affair is enough to make anyone lose their appetite.

Selina takes Amy aside to let her chief of staff know that her boyfriend, Ted may have gotten her pregnant with a little help from a bottle of wine and a Springsteen CD. After assuring the Veep that she'll keep the news to herself, Amy immediately calls Mike to start strategizing potential damage control.

It may be called "Veep," but perhaps "Awkward Situations in Politics" is a more appropriate billing, as Selina learns that she'll be cooped up in Camden Yards with a bunch of disinterested grocery store heads and a baseball team she knows nothing about.

After witnessing Selina attempt to talk football on 'Meet the Press,' you'd think she'd stay away from sports, all together. But sometimes the Vice Presidency calls for making small talk with baseball players. Selina takes to the field with a few Orioles to kill time and pose a photo while Amy (Anna Chlumsky) and Dan try to keep a classroom full of kids entertained as they await a visit from the Veep. Needless to say, neither effort goes over well.

Meanwhile, Mike (Matt Walsh) takes questions from the press on the "Get Moving!" campaign only to be confronted by belligerent journo, Leon West about Selina's firing of a smiley Secret Service agent. Mike calls Amy to warn her but a mix-up involving the words "pregnant" and "repugnant" leads Amy to think the press knows the Veep is with child.

Now fearing the story is out there, Selina calls Ted and insists he her marry her. The Veep even has Sue retrofit her calendar to include the date Ted proposed. With the gas leak under control, Selina heads over to the school for a rendition of "If You're Happy and You Know It."

The Vice President decides to make the kiddies wait a wee bit longer, so she can pee in a cup for a pregnancy test. Gary then interrupts the serenade to let Selina know she's pregnant. As Amy pointed out, Selina is one aneurysm away from the Oval Office. But is she now one illegitimate child away from resignation?
